BANGLADESI PAINTER ZAINUL ABEDIN

Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin was born on 29th December,1914 in Kishoreganj. He studied at Government Art school in Kolkata from 1900 to 1938 and in 1939 joined the faculty of Kolkata art school. In 1943 he drew a series of sketches on the famine that had devastated Bengal that year. The haunting images of cruelty and depravity that he drew in the famine sketches brought Zainul widespread fame. After the partition of India in1947,Zainul came to Dhaka and played a pioneering role in the modern art movement of Bangladesh .He was also a key figure in establishing the Institute of Fine Arts in Dhaka as well as the Folk Art and Crafts Foundationin in Sonargaon. In a land that lacked a long-standing tradition of institutional art, the Shilpacharya emerged as a shaping force both for his creative genius as well as his leadership and organizational abilities. He died on 28 May, 1976.
